Photography, Art Show
South Beach, 1974-1990: Photographs of a Jewish Community explores South Beach the way it was. During the 1970s and 1980s, highlighted photographers Gay Block, Gary Monroe, Richard Nagler, David Scheinbaum, and Andy Sweet each undertook long-term documentation projects of South Beach, before the neighborhood transformed into today’s world famous tourist and nightlife destination. HistoryMiami Museum will display selections from each of their projects, offering personal portraits of the neighborhood in an era when South Beach was predominantly an elderly Jewish community. In addition to photography, the exhibition will also feature Gay Block’s documentary A Bie Gesunt (As Long As You’re Well). This is a project of the museum’s Center for Photography. Sponsors include the Knight Foundation and Susannah and John Shubin.

Join us for a conversation about the role of spirituals, gospel, and R&B evolving to Soul music played during the Civil Rights era in Miami. Hear personal accounts from Dr. Marvin Dunn and Sam Moore “The Legendary Soul Man.” Dr. Marvin Dunn is a retired chairman of the Department of Psychology at Florida International University and the author of the book Black Miami in the Twentieth Century. Sam Moore is a Miami native vocalist who was a member of the soul and R&B group Sam & Dave from 1961 to 1981. He is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame (for “Soul Man”), and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
