Free Gospel Sunday: Lisa Knowles Smith & The Brown Singers

Gospel
Female gospel quartet the Brown Singers was formed in Memphis, Tennessee in the late '70s by Willie Mae Richmond (whose maiden name was Brown). The group quickly garnered a following for their beautiful and energetic vocal performances. Richmond's granddaughter, Lisa Knowles-Smith, joined the quartet when she was nine years old, and by the time she turned 12, she was the lead singer. The Knowles-Smith led version of the quartet performed with the same flair and soulful sound as the original group, but added more of a modern and contemporary flavor to the mix. The group’s debut national album, Experience the Evolution - Live, was released in 2008, and was nominated for 2 Stellar Awards.

Michael Barenboim & West-Eastern Divan Ensemble

Classical
MICHAEL BARENBOIM & WEST-EASTERN DIVAN ENSEMBLE.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS.
In 1999, Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said founded the West-Eastern Divan as a workshop for Israeli, Palestinian and other Arab musicians. Within the workshop, individuals who had only interacted with each other through the prism of war found themselves living and working together as equals. As they listened to each other during rehearsals and discussions, they traversed deep political and ideological divides. Though this experiment in coexistence was intended as a one-time event, it quickly evolved into a legendary orchestra. Three years after it was established, the orchestra was given a home in Seville by the regional Spanish government of Andalusia. The area’s history as a center for sustained coexistence among Muslims, Christians and Jews in Europe continues in the West-Eastern Divan’s rehearsals and discussions.

Pink Martini was formed in 1994 by aspiring Portland politician Thomas Lauderdale, who got the idea to provide more entertaining, uplifting music at political functions for causes such as civil rights, education, public broadcasting and more. A year later, Lauderdale called on former Harvard classmate China Forbes to join the band, and together they began writing songs together for the "little orchestra." Since then, the group has been known for drawing its inspiration from a myriad of sources, including romantic Hollywood musicals of the '40s and '50s, and a multilingual repertoire of diverse genres like jazz, Latin, lounge and classical, all shaken and stirred with cinematic influences, driving rhythms and exotic vocals. A typical Pink Martini concert spans the globe, from Cuban rumba and Parisian cafe tunes to Carnival disco.

Beethoven and Strauss

Classical, Orchestral
New World Symphony Fellows offer an electrifying evening in this season’s final performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Cristian Macelaru, a University of Miami Frost School of Music graduate and new Chief Conductor of Cologne’s WDR Symphony Orchestra, commands the podium in Richard Strauss’ Don Juan. Brimming with passion, this heroic tone poem reframes the famed heartbreaker’s pursuits. Performing together for over four decades, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio combines three acclaimed solo artists into one dynamite performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Triple Concerto. The thrilling frenzy of George Enescu’s virtuosic First Romanian Rhapsody is grounded in the folk and gypsy traditions of his homeland, while J.S. JAZZ ROOTS: AN EVENING WITH BRANFORD MARSALIS

Jazz
An Evening with Branford Marsalis.
Branford Marsalis Quartet with Opening Act Veronica Swift.
Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and revered figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz Master, Grammy® Award winner and Tony Award nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet.
After more than three decades of existence with minimal personnel changes, this celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of both original compositions and jazz and popular classics. After the Grammy-nominated Upward Spiral, the Quartet has followed up with The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, its most emotionally wide-ranging and melody driven collection to date. John Zeugner captured the impact of the Quartet in live performance in a recent concert review, calling it “casually confident, professional, cerebral, and supercharged with energy. The Branford Marsalis Quartet…was all of those adjectives and more.”
Opening the evening will be one of the top young jazz singers on the scene, Veronica Swift, who Variety says "it's not often you hear one so young interpret the sounds of a seasoned jazz performer and make everything she touches her own [...] that's Veronica Swift!"
