Florida Grand Opera: The Marriage of Figaro

Opera
The servants turn the tables on the masters in Mozart's biting and sexually charged comedy about the established social order being tossed on its head. Today, Figaro rocks with the same revolutionary spirit that made it such a popular success at its 1786 premier. Experience an intoxicating take on one of the great ensemble comedies in all of opera, with its endless supply of unforgettable melodies popularized in the movie The Shawshank Redemption. (Sung in Italian, with projected translations in English and Spanish.) Each program is accompanied by a pre-show lecture an hour before curtain with a talk-back session immediately following the performance.

Les Miserables: National Tour

Musical
Cameron Mackintosh presents the new production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, "Les Misérables," direct from an acclaimed two-and-a-half-year return to Broadway. This beloved musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg is based on Hugo's famous novel of 19th-century France. The action begins in 1815 as Jean Valjean is condemned to 19 years of hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family. When he is released on parole, he finds only hatred and suspicion. Meeting one man who believes in him, Valjean breaks his parole to begin a new life. The story truly begins as Jean Valjean crosses the landscape of France, always pursued by the righteous police inspector Javert. From Valjean's adoption and love of the orphan Cosette, to the darkly funny plots of the thieving Thenardiers, from the soaring revolutionary fire set by student rebels fighting in the streets of Paris to the final confrontation between Jean Valjean and Javert, this story is one of love, courage and redemption. As the now-famous lyric from the show says, "To love another person is to see the face of God."

Jazz Roots: R+R=Now

Jazz
In an era when every headline carries some new horror or fresh worry, we need music that can clap back with immediacy, skill, and heart. We need a band so at home in its skin that it can play without ego and lead with love—artists whose very existence attests to resilience and hope. We need R+R=NOW, a supergroup assembled by Robert Glasper but functionally egalitarian, in no small part because its members are visionary players, composers, and producers on their own: Glasper on keys, Terrace Martin on synthesizer and vocoder, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah on trumpet, Derrick Hodge on bass, Taylor McFerrin on synth and beatbox, and newcomer Justin Tyson on drums. You could try to count up the GRAMMYs between them but you'd be missing the point. This genre-mashing outfit moves as one and, as their name reveals, with great purpose.
