Drawings/Works on Paper, Gallery
The Directed Art Modern is pleased to present B.L. Jesseph, Rob Anderson, and Franck de las Mercedes in the group exhibition Monokhromos. The Greek word monokhromos means using black and white, or one color in varying hues, shades and tones. For this exhibition, the palette is comprised of white, black and their shades, likening the exhibition to a newspaper also stark in black and white, where the news is paramount. The same level of importance is found here in each of the artworks presented as they all report different qualities of the human condition and experience. Rob Anderson documents his experiences in and around New York City and presents both literal and metaphorical landscapes, drawing attention to the interconnectedness of life, objects, people, and places and focusing on the architecture of the surrounding city and of self. B.L. Jesseph utilizes the logic of geometry and a tool often seen as an instrument of rebellion to create serene works and transform smooth surfaces into ones overflowing with texture, suggesting that harmony within the composition can be achieved elsewhere. Franck de las Mercedes explores his memories of childhood in Nicaragua and how they define, and to a certain extent, haunt his adult artwork by painting with both his dominant and non-dominant hands to shift between an adult perspective and one of innocence, while drawing attention to the suffering of those depicted in his works. Bringing together three artists, the exhibition also strives to bring about universal truths, as well as universal hopes. The opening reception is on July 11, 2019 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, and runs through July 31, 2019.
