From the desk of Wine Director Eric Larkee, Michael's Genuine Food & Drink, on the wines for this dinner:
To be totally candid I don't know Washington state wines that well. I usually have one or two kicking around on the list but I've never been in the state nor have I ever worked with a list that had a deep selection. Why is this the case? I don't know. Its kind of a rhetorical question anyway and I'd rather look to the future than the past. So, the future. Tuesday December 11 we going to be popping corks on an outstanding assortment of Washington state reds (we'll start of with New Mexican sparkling from Gruet, keeping it All-American in the house). First we'll hit up the classic Italian varietal Sangiovese from Leonetti alongside Gramercy Cellar's Spanish stalwart Tempranillo. Following that, Rhone in the New World with a Grenache blend and Syrah both from Gramercy Cellars. Finally Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cab-based blend from Figgins. I'm not only stoked about the three different styles of wines we'll be trying but the three different winery guys joining us. We'll be joined by Chris Figgins who is the winemaker at Leonetti and the owner/winemaker of Figgins. Drew Bledsoe (yes, THAT Drew Bledsoe), the owner of Doubleback and Greg Harrington, the owner and winemaker of Gramercy Cellars. The three represent different perspectives of the Washington industry. Figgins has been around since the dawn of time of Washington wine. Bledsoe comes from the direction someone who had a (very) successful first career and has parlayed that into the wine industry while Harrington is a Master Sommelier coming from New York City background. I think that the wines and people will provide numerous different perspectives and viewpoints. I'm looking forward to learning a lot that night, my main problem (and only) problem with the dinner is that I'm going to have to remember that I'll be there to pour the wine for you.
