Caged Canary

Art Show
CAGED CANARY Faena Bazaar is pleased to announce the opening of "Caged Canary," a solo exhibition by social practice + recycled media artist Sam Heydt. Illusion won’t save us from reality, even as the sustained narrative of tabloids becomes history and the myth of progress continues to perpetuate inequality. Globalization has moved forward unevenly and no one can say where this "New Frontier" is taking us. Our time is marked by deindustrialization and the exploitation of cheap labor, climate change and clean coal, nationalism and a refugee crisis. Earth has entered a new geologic era brought on by human activity and pollution. The skeletons of old factories serve as caveats of a world increasingly reduced to a bottom line. Yet, these portents are drowned out by the white noise of the media, which lure us in with the empty promises it proposes for the future it truncates. Through movie imagery, war photography and vintage advertisement, this exhibition takes the self-deception of the post-war American middle class – i.e., the narrative created by tabloids, television, and cinema – as a leading motive, and sidesteps into iconographically related themes. By combining images of destruction and disaster with images portraying the virtues and ideals of the 1950s, Heydt confronts the American Dream with the ecological nightmare advanced industrialization is responsible for. On view through April 2019, the exhibition is comprised of intimately scaled mixed media works, dioramas, photography, found object interventions and direct animation films. Sam Heydt: Born in 1986 in New York City. Studied at La Sorbonne, Cooper Union, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Universiteit van Amsterdam, The New School & Parsons School of Design.
