BC Chamber Players: "Great Romantic Piano Trios"

Classical
Members of Broward College music faculty gather to perform two of the most beloved Romantic works by Johannes Brahms. Piano Trio No. 1, op. 8 in B major is particularly known for its soaring, passionate opening and persistent virtuosic intensity. This expansive work was originally written in 1854, when Brahms was only twenty years old, but heavily revised in 1889, so that it can be considered a distinct work, combining the unabashed Romanticism of early Brahms with precise mastery of his later style. It is the only work by Brahms that exists in two versions, although it is almost always the revised version that is performed today. In an unusual twist, it is one of very few multi-movement works to begin in a major key, but end in a tonic minor- an overtly Romantic gesture. In contrast, Piano Trio No. 3 is much more compact and terse. It was written in 1883, while Brahms was vacationing in Switzerland, following the premiere of his last major orchestral work, Symphony No. 4. It is as if Brahms had decided towards the end of this life to distill his thoughts to purer forms. A straight-forward first movement is followed by a delicate scherzo, a relatively short slow movement and a muscular finale. Piano Trio No. 3 in C Minor, op. 101 Allegro energico Presto non assai Andante grazioso Allegro molto Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major, op. 8 (revised version) Allegro con moto Scherzo: Allegro molto Adagio Finale: Allegro molto
